Background: Grad school days. Group of three travel buddies. One of those "14 countries in 12 days" survey trips. To save on hotels and time, drove all night (rental car) and did the tourist thing all day. Allowed two whole days in Switzerland to exhaustively cover the country.
Day 1: Climbed from valley floor up to villages on lower slopes of Schilthorn. All-day scrambling and exploring.
Day 2: Due to shortness of time, did the cable car to summit, enjoying chocolate cake and views of Jungfrau. Sometimes the tourist thing is OK.
Enjoyable walk with a lot of snow still present! Great views across the valley of the Monch, Eiger and Jungfrau!
My friend lost his glasses glissading down on cardboard from the restaurant and spend hours searching the snow until he finally found them.
long day.. incredible views.. as long as you can
look past the disney world like crap up there... theres
a big piece of cement with a spinning resteraunt and
a cable car running touristos up. cant' have
everything. set out from gimmelwald to rotstockhutte
to roter herd than over to the top. hiked with a great
couple of folks met over at the youth hostel in
gimmelwald the hub of activity in this incredible little
village. stayed at esters barn ....2 swiss francs
for a stall of hay and breakfast delivered to barn
door! trip of a lifetime.
Was still a lot of snow but easy if not steep "climb" to the top, put on crampons about half way up. Boot skied back down then hiked back to Murren
Nice route, but i didnt like the busy restaurant on the summit...
First time I walked up from Stechelberg (922 meters high) it took me 4 hours and 20 minutes to reach the summit. In 2003 it took me a bit longer. The sign in Stechelberg says something like 6 hours 45 minutes though, but you can do it way faster. It's a nice walk from this town, and because it is the longest route to the top as far as I know not many people start from there. I reccommend it though. Both times I reached the summit the visibility was near zero, so I wouldn't know what the view is like unfortunately. Still I enjoyed the walk. It's very doable in one day, just start early in the morning.
Great route to a great top
