Re: Popularly called...Sundogs are partial rainbows that appear on opposite sides of the sun. They don't require rain, just clouds. This is not a sundog.

Glory, Brocken and FogbowThis is a magnificent sighting. The shadow is that of the photographer cast through the mist - it is often called a "Brocken Spectre".
The inner coloured rings are a 'glory'

produced when sunlight is diffracted and backscattered by the small water drops of fog and mist.
The outer rings are a fogbow with very bright and clear inner supernumerary fringes

To produce so many clear inner fringes the fog droplets must have all been almost of the same size.
