Re: Popularly called...

So it's a sundog? Luiso calls it a Brocken Spectre. I guess I'll still have some research to do :-)

Re: Popularly called...

Luiso's quite right.

A sun dog is something else - but at least you'll know one when you see one (as will I).

Cheers,

Martin

Re: Popularly called...

Sundogs are partial rainbows that appear on opposite sides of the sun. They don't require rain, just clouds. This is not a sundog.

Glory, Brocken and Fogbow

This is a magnificent sighting. The shadow is that of the photographer cast through the mist - it is often called a "Brocken Spectre".

The inner coloured rings are a 'glory'
http://www.atoptics.co.uk/droplets/glory.htm
produced when sunlight is diffracted and backscattered by the small water drops of fog and mist.

The outer rings are a fogbow with very bright and clear inner supernumerary fringes

To produce so many clear inner fringes the fog droplets must have all been almost of the same size.

Thanks for the explanation. I'll change the caption accordingly.

Re: MIndblowing

Thanks! The real experience was even more strange than the photo tells. Also, I cannot decide whether I like this picture or the other one:
