Self Portrait

Self Portrait on the summit of Piz Lad. Clouds kept rolling by underneath us while the sun was shining brightly onto us. The result: a showcase of the photographer's aura. Sept 8th 2008

Re: Fantastic...

Thanks Hiltrud. It's even more fantastic if you see the spectre in person...

Great shot

Perhaps the best photo of a Brocken specter that I've ever seen.
Cheers from Spain.

Re: Great shot

Thanks Luiso. I must admit that I used a polarization filter, which helps a lot with any type of rainbow. On the other hand it can make rainbows disappear completely.

Re: super cool...

Thanks Barbara. I'm not sure you're right. A few years ago I used a shot of me, as I was jumping from a 6m pole. I thought that one was pretty cool, too ;-)

Re: super cool...

mmmm good point.
I'm not sure I am right me neither. You've posting pages since 2003 and there's no way I can flip back through your massive photo collection and find the one you're talking about. How many are they now, 6263? OMG
I like the new one though. Anyone could jump from a 6mt pole, what do you think. -I do that every morning just to keep up in good shape. LoL. - but... having such a beautiful aura is ...wow..unique.
God save the king. :)

Re: super cool...

Actually you're right - it was a company outing and really everybody climbed on that pole, turned around 180° and jumped off.

On the other hand everybody can climb a mountain and chase a Brocken spectre (that's what they obviously call these things) as well.

There is an album

There is an album of brocken spectres here. I attached your wonderful photos. I saw my 3rd brocken spectre on Ortler some weeks ago.. It's wonderful to see more recent pictures from mountains close to it. Cheers, Tomas :)

Re: There is an album

I rarely look at albums. Thanks for directing me. A nice collection of spectre shots. I see at least one which was also shot with polarizer, which accentuates the effect drastically.

Yes - we were based in Burgeis for three weeks and tried to climb as much as possible. Not being technical climbers at all we were hampered by (far too) early snow.

Thanks

Re: Coolest!

It's pretty weird if you experience it. At first we only saw a little spectre around the summit cross but then we hiked out on the ridge of the mountain and suddenly saw it in its full glory (sic!). The rainbows reach out in multiple halos as you can see from the other picture.

I saw...

...aura with a triple rainbow. But so many! You must have added a lot of your own auras to what the sun was doing. Do you have any left?

Re: I saw...

maybe I added a little bit ;-) I think I was lucky about the polarizer, which caught the outer halos I hadn't seen at first glimpse.

Whew!

Wow, gangolf. Noe THAT'S what I call a picture! 'The spectre' is something that I have always wanted to see and this is by far one of the best shots I've ever come across!
Magnificant! Seriously, thanks for posting this!

Re: Whew!

Thanks Kiefer! Actually I hadn't known that such a phenomenon existed before I started on that hike. Now I do and thanks to SP I know its name and have been directed to more info about it.

And now I'm an expert :-)

St. Gangolf of Summitpost!

Only seen this thing once in the Tatras many years ago but this one is so much more impressive. The great contributor of SP fully deserves such a profile pic :)))
cheers

Re: St. Gangolf of Summitpost!

Yes, I have been feeling some holiness, ever since I took this photograph :-)

The spectre was completely unexpected. The other picture is even more impressive imho.
