That Darn Snow  Sucess!

I went out early and didn't encounter anything out of the ordinary until I hit the upper part of the ridge right before a saddle. There were footprints of people who had come a few weeks ago and sinking up to their upper thighs in some snowbanks. Would I fare better?

Of course not. I sunk in just as deep and got a ton of snow in my shoes. Undeterred I kept going, reminded of my very first solo hike almost ten years ago in Idaho on Cape Horn. Eventually I hit the base of South Signal and hit some dry spots before contouring around to Signal Mountain. There was not much snow around the two mountains so that was nice. The clouds hadn't rolled in yet and I got great views of the surrounding terrain. I even saw my way out.

In the burn scar there didn't appear to be much snow, so I trekked down towards the north side of the ridge and navigated the mud and deadfall from the fire. Wasn't so bad and made the return trip much more pleasant.

Signal mountain   Sucess!

Great views of the mummies and rmnp from a vantage point where you’re unlikely to encounter any other hikers.

Clouds, Marmots, and Lightning  Sucess!

Took the Bulwark Ridge up from Dunraven Trailhead. Got up to South Signal around 10:30 a.m. and descended Signal around 11:30. The summits of both peaks were enshrouded in cloud when we first arrived but it cleared up to some spectacular views. We could see all the way up to the Medicine Bow Mountains in Wyoming. Just as we were descending Signal Mtn. a couple of hikers were about to summit. At the saddle we looked west and saw a monster thunderhead approaching from Comanche Peak. Just as we got below treeline some monstrous thunder began to roar. I hope those two dudes didn't get caught up high for long!

Bulwark Ridge/N. Inlet  Sucess!

God-awful windy day. It wasn't that cold though. The wind speed and the temp must have been pretty much the same. Even in snow, this was an easy jaunt to make to a couple of non-descript "hills". Quite enjoyable though!

The date is an educated guess that should be accurate within a week or two. This was my first Colorado summit. Huzzah!
