Smoky Mountain Tree Hugger 1996

Smoky Mountain Tree Hugger 1996

Some tree huggin' dirty hiker near Ramsey Cascade,Smoky Mountain National Park, hugging a big Tulip Tree.
Notice the way-cool pigtails and cheesey "Moab - Utah!" ballcap. Sheesh. She probably thought she was cool.

Great tree!

I never get tired of finding those old giant poplars throughout the park!

Re: Great tree!

Bob,

I simply adore this part of the country (Southern Appalacians) and can't wait to get back for a visit! The big trees are just one of many things that make this area special.

Cheers,

Sarah

Re: Great tree!

If you haven't been in a while, you'll be horrified to find that all of the old growth hemlocks are dead. They did manage to save a few small patches by treating them with insecticide, but for the most part the entire hemlock ecosystem is gone from the park.

Re: Great tree!

Bob,

That's really a sad story - I'm sorry to hear that. I was a real tree nerd as a kid - running through the woods with my little field guide to North American trees, etc., trying to ID trees/species. It's sad to think about the demise of these giants.
