Sunset peak  Sucess!

Climbed Sunset Pk. as described by C. Jones book. Bear encounter on the way out; non- aggressive, sure did scare my dog though.

Sunset Peak  Sucess!

Climbed Sunset from The Notch between Olson and Hogback Mountain. Initially considered the route from East Fork Blacktail, but this proved to be the superior route. The road to The Notch is brutal so high clearance 4-wheel drive is necessary. From The Notch at 8600 feet we followed the obvious route to an old mining route (It’s visible on Google Earth) which took us to an old mine just below the saddle of Olson and Sunset. From the saddle we followed the ridge all the way up. Heavy snow had fallen a few days before, and there was still plenty left from the winter which made the exposed scrambling portion a little dicey. Later in the year when there is no snow I imagine this route is rather simple. 2000 feet of gain and 5 miles round trip.
