From Snowshoe Lake
Been to the peak twice from Snowshoe Lake. I'm not sure on the exact date of my summits, as they were a few years ago. A tricky gulley below the saddle can be interesting in the early season due to snow. Great views from the top of the highest peak in the Cabinet Mountain Wilderness Area.

From Snowshoe Lake at 6143 ft. scramble up a steep scree filled gulley on the right till you reach the saddle at about 7500 ft. During early season this gulley is snow filled so bring ice axe. From the saddle head Northeast up an easy ridge to the summit. Getting to Snowshoe Lake is difficult since the Kootenia Forest Service refuses to maintain the manway and it is a total brush bash.
While I didn't summit, I did enjoy every bit of the Cabinets! I wasn't mentally prepared, started late, and so on. The views of Snowshoe from mid-way up the slopes to the E/NE of the lake are awesome! I talked with a guy on the way down and got some info about an approach from the other side of the mountain via Snowshoe Lake...I might try that next year?

Being in the area, I had to try this peak. Information on Snowshoe Peak was very hard to find. A concise TR and a few sentences out of Climbers guide to Montana were all I had. Route finding challenges and a late start conspired to almost force me to bivy. I did learn one thing: a Petzl Tikka with partially discharged batteries isn't bright enough for off trail hiking. I think I was the first person to reach the summit this year since the register was last signed in October, 2002.
