Schmittenhöhe (1965m)...
...is not necessarily a mountain I could write a mountain page about with a clear conscience, because this is one of the parade skiing areas of Austria - ski-lifts everywhere, on all sides, and three restaurants, one on the very top, where there is also a hotel, one further below and one one the north end of the broad and gentle crest. Each one of these has blaring rock music playing all the time - you can imagine how fun that is for someone who doesn't go up there for skiing. In summer, oh well, at least no rock music, but of course you see the lifts and the scars everywhere...Nevertheless, the Schmittenhöhe is interesting for two things: it's the outset point of the long and beautiful
Pinzgauer Höhenweg (see also
Vid Pogacnik's page upon the shorter Pinzgauer Spaziergang (Walk)), and one has one of the best possible views over the entire chain of the Hohe Tauern; Venediger group, Granatspitze group, Glockner group, Goldberg group and Ankogel group all stand parade. I did a day trip to Zell am See and went up Schmittenhöhe on the weatherwise fantastic winter day of February 26th, 2011, simply to catch some of the views.
