Somewhere in time

Somewhere in time

"And you run, and you run to catch up with the sun, But it's sinking. Racing around to come up behind you again. The sun is the same in a relative way, but You're older. Shorter of breath and one day closer to death." Pink Floyd (1973) Actually, my topo link got screwed up. This landmark takes several days to reach; its not like you can jump off a boat from Lake Powell and suddenly come upon it. Please see THIS PHOTO from SP-member 'Scott.' Atop the Rainbow Plateau southwest of Rainbow Bridge National Monument, the harsh environment beats in remarkable rhythm with Nature. The landscape dominating this canyon country is the product of eons of geologic activity; shifting of continents, global rising and falling of sea levels, and creation of highlands now worn and redeposited. At times, desert dominated the landscape; sometimes, freshwater or saltwater seas invaded, leaving rivers to erode the layers. The last uplift of the Colorado Plateau began about 10 million years ago. Uplift made meandering streams of the Colorado River run faster and cut the canyons that are Lake Powell's basin. Navajo and Wingate Sandstone, the dominant formations (seen here,) are made of sand dunes hardened by ground water minerals. The deposits eventually wore away with the elements, revealing the landscape seen today. PLEASE CLICK the photo for a CLOSER view of the sandstone, and enjoy this natural treasure. ~ Photographed exclusively by Gary Ladd ~ (November 1994) Taken in San Juan County, Utah, just south of Lake Powell and north of Arizona.

Re: Very cool!

It borders on the bizarre. I have to keep
on pinching myself to make sure it's real.

Re: wow

Yes, in southern Utah they call it
'slickrock.' In Arizona, we call it a
'dreamscape.' I still miss the ocean!
We can't have everything in this crazy
life ... la vida loca!!! Thanks, BazZ!

Re: wow

Yes, it's the kind of 'dreamscape' you
could spend half of your life looking at
and exploring. Many books have been
published, paintings have been painted,
dreams have been dreamed, hills have been
explored and rivers have been RUN ... but
it always helps to know that Nature is the
supreme artist and captivator. Thanks!!!

Supreme artist.... I Agree

that's the explanation I was looking for for years... THANKS A LOT.....

Re: wow

Hey, BazZ! I got that word "supreme"
from the "hamburger supreme" at the fast-
food restaurant across the street. They
don't sell beer, but their burgers are
out of this world!!! : - )

Re: sandstone marvels...

Greetings, peterbud! It seems to have a
universal attraction. I've been living
in Arizona since 1991, and I miss the ocean!
The Rainbow Plateau is an "ocean of sand
that has turned to stone!" Thank you.

Re: Wow

I love snow and trees! But this is a
refreshing break from the snow and trees,
at least for a couple minutes. I wonder
if SP-member Radek has seen this yet?
Thanks for your contribution and comments.

Awesome attraction!

This is an incredible formation! Thanks for sharing it with us. "Dreamscape" is a very good description.

Re: Awesome attraction!

When something is beautiful, you want to
share it with the whole world! Some people
dream in black and white. I often dream in
crimson, pink and orange! I think it has
something to do with being born near the
ocean. Thanks for your comments and
wonderful contributions, rdmc!!! !!!

thank you for sharing. Looks like the formation behind is well on its way to an arch.

Re: great photo!

That really means a lot coming from you,
Dan! And you're absolutely RIGHT. I am
just an AGENT between the camera and the
Colorado Plateau. As far as geology, there's
something being "built up" and "torn down"
with each passing day. Nature is quite
satisfied with her WORK. And I am happy...
just to dream about it!!!! Thanks, Dan!

Truly wonderful

I have always wanted to get a closer look at the desert sandstone towers of Utah and Colorado. Sandstone, especially the red one, is a wonderful kind of rock. Over here we have quite similar formations. However, they are often overgrown and almost invisibly hidden among dense trees.

Re: Truly wonderful

Gangolf, I understand that you and others
would like to get a closer look at the
geological wonder called the Colorado Plateau. This is basically the reason I
posted this photograph. Why should photos
like this one be hiding in a dusty basement
or attic? Sandstone is a favorite of mine,
also. But, the formations in Utah have been
cast or created in the middle of a desert,
so I'm suggesting orientation skills and a
good topo map when visiting these natural
treasures. You are kind, and thank you for the wonderful comment and for contributing
so generously to SP! Have a great day.
