Like the scenery, the contrasts, the diminishing line and over all composition...

In short: in the composition of a photo or a painting there is a diminishing size(s) of planes established by a horizon line and vanishing point. Essentially it sets the scale. In the case of your photo the background (mountain range) and middle ground (valley) fading off to the left, to me, conveyed a dramatic effect in the composition of the image. The silhouetted person on the foreground of jumbled rocks enhanced the effect of a background diminishing line. Damn, need another dark beer after that verbose response...
