Snow and Flowers  Sucess!

Started at the St. Mary's Pass trailhead and came back the same way (instead of descending on the PCT to make it a loop). There were two small snow patches on the trail, which can be crossed relatively easily without the use of microspikes or crampons. Although the trail does get steep at times, it's still a class 1 hike all the way. There were also plenty of nice wildflowers on the first mile of the hike.

Saint Mary's Pass Route  Sucess!

I enjoyed returning to this neck of the woods, having visited the top of Stanislaus Peak a year or two ago. On the plateau above St Mary's Pass, the trail fades for a while and in the low light I lost it, so just aimed more or less straight for the top and finally reconnected with the trail about 50 feet below the summit. Along the way, a fast moving T-storm rolled right over me so I made for the colony of little pines ahead and found a bit of shelter underneath them as the thunder and the lightning and the corn snow fell. Soaked and covered with dirt, it was a memorable time.

Alpine warm-up #`1  Sucess!

Alpine warm-up #1.
My 19 yo son and I headed out from the St. Mary's Pass TH (last time we went up the chute from the Sonora Pass parking lot).
What a beautiful hike. Perfect warm-up.
Next up is Excelsior Mountain on July 10th, then Tumanguya on August 3rd. Hoping to nab Conness in early-mid Fall too this year.
Weather was nice, temps mid-50s, stiff breezes at the summit (15-20 mph magnitude).
We looped (5.7 mi RT) down the Southeast shoulder and down some class 3 outcroppings and very loose/steep scree.
Only thing I would do different is leave my dogs, it was a little too much given the pumice-like scree and outcroppings. But they did fine and weren't too sore, one minor raw spot, otherwise they killed it and had hella fun!

Dayhike  Sucess!

Really fun Halloween hike with awesome late season weather. We went for Stanislaus first and after that climb didn’t feel like dealing with the ridge line so we rode the trail back to the junction and headed for Sonora from there. My buddy was slowing but we were on top before we knew it. We enjoyed both peaks completely windless, and stayed on Sonora to watch the sunset. The alpenglow on all the granite to the south was amazing. We didn’t make Ritter or Tower this year but seeing them today was a reminder of what we have to look forward to! We put on headlamps and cruised down. I got lost in the sunset and realized I was looking at Mount Diablo, the clearest I’ve ever seen it from the Sierra. A hard day, but a really enjoyable hike.

Great beginner summit  Sucess!

Hiked straight up out of the Sonora Pass parking lot. This was my first summit above 9k in 25 years. There were a couple areas that were challenging class 2+ but completely passable.
Had two 16 year old young men, my son and his buddy. They kicked butt, but the OG summited first LOL!
It was a little hazy from the Ferguson Fire near Yosemite, but didn't ruin the vistas.
Will likely do it again sometime under better air quality conditions.
Highly recommended hike.

Nice drive to an easy summit  Sucess!

The drive by itself is worth it. The peak is just a small bonus. Nice beginners mountain for kids. I ended up bringing one of mine.

Great peak, but hated SE trail  Sucess!

The peak was beautiful. We should have descended to St. Mary's Pass to the NW. Unfortunately we followed a "use" trail along the SE ridge. No thank you!! It looks easy at first; then it turns into a questionable class 2 trail that also has false leads. (Maybe class 3 in a few places.) There should be a warning barrier or something.

First peak for friend  Sucess!

Took Josh and Charlie up via St Mary's. Nice quick hike to Sonora, which was the highest peak so far for the other guys. Hiked over to Stanislaus, but didn't have time to climb it needing to get back home for a late afternoon commitment.

South Ridge Zig Zag  Sucess!

Took an old abandoned jeep track that is right on the ridge crest from Sonora Pass. Then up a bootpath that cuts left of the pinnacles on the S ridge. Hit the PCT right where it crosses the ridge at 10,400. Then up a discernible bootpath for a while on the SE ridge. Lost the bootpath at one point and sidehilled on the S slopes which was a mistake since they were loose and slow going. Came down the SE ridge down to 10,400 again which was much better. Then down the PCT which meandered too much. Would take bootpath the whole way if I were to do it again.
