Sonora Pass/PCT
4th time up this peak, views are always great. This time came from Leavitt Peak down to the Pass and up via the PCT. A very loose route once leaving the trail, but short and direct.

from Sonora Pass
"Easy" finish to a 8-peak 7-day Sierran jaunt. I say "easy" because I managed to take probably the two most difficult routes up and down this peak.. full of loose volcanic scree and steep gullies. I should've stuck with the use trails.

Day two of a two peak weekend in California! Nice short hike, so we could drive back to civilization in order for me to catch a 6:00 a.m. flight the next morning.

Take the nordwand!!
Made the mistake of following Gary Suttle's suggestion to just climb right up the southwest slope through the neverending volcanic scree. I must have come up the steepest part, ha! It was a miserable slog, and I recommend against it highly. With the angle somewhere aroung 30-40% in places, and very loose, it was tough to climb that 600 feet, slipping a couple feet every couple steps. Definitely class 2 climbing here.
Should have come to SummitPost first. There is a very nice use trail that ascends very sensibly up the more reasonably-sloped northwest slopes from the saddle to the summit. I used this use trail to descend, and was VERY easy to follow back to the sloping plateau between the peak and Saint Marys Pass.
Trip down was refreshing and easy. Weather was a bit blustery for this time of the year, had to bust out my winter shell and gloves at Saint Marys Pass. Views from the summit were absolutely amazing, with sweeping views in ALL directions! Very clear skies.
Got in the car and drove to Lone Pine immediately afterward and began a hike up to Cottonwood Lakes for an attempt the next day on Mount Langley.

Only spent 10 seconds on the summit due to an impending lightning storm. Nice hike with Jess, Taya, Ryan, and Arron.

Leavitt on the way to the Sister-In Laws house, Snora on the return trip. Limited time allowance forced me to go very fast. Nothing like the PCT- best trail in the world!

South Ridge
Hiked this peak with my 8-year-old son via the South Ridge from the top of Sonora Pass at the Mono-Alpine county line. He enjoyed his first 11er, and he's looking forward to a 12er soon.

My dog(Ginger) and I did this on the way to Stanislaus. Nice short hike. We made it to about 500 feet of the summit of Stanislaus when the thunder and lighting started to get crazy. I will go back and get Stanislaus in Sept and start early.

3rd time up this route, much different conditions. 50% snow coverage the entire way, with drifts up to 5ft deep. More snow than I've ever seen this time of year, parking lot still snowed in. Beautiful sunrise.

I use this summit as a training peak for future hikes. I try to do this one at least once a year from either trialheads. I also try to introduce people to peakbagging with this peak..

The views are outstanding, spanning from Round Top to the White Mountains, Ritter and Banner, and Lyell.
