South Buttress

Shirley on the narrow little ridge of a summit of Cutthroat Peak following our climb of South Buttress. In the background (chopped off partially) are the Wine Spires (?). This is looking roughly east (June 4, 2005).

Nice job!

Good photo and nice job getting up into the North Cascades. How was the route? It looks like there is not much snow up there!

Re: Nice job!

Hi Jim,

Thanks!

No not much snow left there at all. We brought ice axes and crampons thinking we might hit some consolidated stuff in the approach gully but that was totally dry. As was the route except for a 20'X20' patch we saw near the summit (away from route). Liberty Bell area looks dry as well (some snow on the approach but domes look dry).

As for the route....

The climb is OK at best in my opinion - most of it is long stretches of 3rd/4th class with singular steps of up to mid 5th. The crux was easy for an .8 (more like a .7). Did take a direct variation (as in I messed up) and that section was ~5.8+ or so.

Views are I guess the primary reason to do this climb - spectacular panoramas! Even the approach is gorgeous (open meadows).

talk to you later
