Via South Ridge  Sucess!

A beautiful day. Route is pretty much snow free. No need for spikes or an axe. Just some poles are helpful. Watch out for mosquitoes below treeline in the morning and at night, they will eat you alive. The route gets very hot around noon and throughout the afternoon so I would suggest an early start.

Nice scrambling  Sucess!

About two and a half years later, I would find this climb qualified me for the membership of Mazamas (https://mazamas.org/).

Sunset Summit  Sucess!

Hiked up for a beautiful sunset and had a difficult time finding the trail down. Weather was fantastic.

Goal achieved  Sucess!

This peak had been on my mind for years, and despite being out of shape, I made it... along with many, many others. I was fairly surprised to see that Teardrop Pool had not yet formed yet for the season... and that wildfire smoke from 150 miles away permeated the air.

Beautiful day clouded over  Sucess!

A very difficult hike but we reached the summit in 5 hours and descended in 3.5 hours with a group of 11 at a variety of skills and fitness levels. We started at 7:45 am, glad we didn't start any later because the storm rolled in once we reached the peak.

Gloves and trekking poles were a must, micro spikes were very nice to have.

We had great weather until right before we reached the summit - then it clouded over and snowed the whole way down. Be prepared for all weather, even on a clear sunny day, it can change very quickly!!!

Run up  Sucess!

Summited with a buddy, running much (but certainly not all) of it, beautiful day, during a nice break in the summer smoke. Lots of fun rock jumping and sliding through the scree on the run down. 3.5 hrs, with lots of stops for pics. Fun summit, epic views.

Climb and ski  Sucess!

Great climb and descent! Left at 6 from Devils Lake. Still snow from large boulder about a mile from the trail head until the crater and actually stayed in the crater on snow most of the way along the ridge. Basically a boot pack the whole way. Skied down from just below the summit all the way back to the boulder. Took skis off just a couple times for small portages. Took our time. Back to the car at 3.

Heavy Cloud and Wind  Sucess!

South Spur to the top. Real windy and chilly up there. Traveling fast and light feels great, but didn't allow us to any time to enjoy ourselves up there. Not that there was anything to see.

So much fun  Sucess!

Good times climbing with my daughter. Doesn't get much better. Blue skies, perfect temp. Snow just right for micro spikes. Met some super awesome people. My dog Dexter was a very happy dog. Glissaded almost all the way down to the trees. Would never do this in the heat of summer!

Like climbing on Mars  Sucess!

When bad weather forced me to cancel my Mt. Baker climb, my oldest son and I decided to visit Bend and climb South Sister. Weather was mild and we made average time, reaching the summit in just over four hours. While the red volcanic dust is now forever embedded in the fabric of my climbing pants, the view made the scree slog worth the effort.

Great Group Trip  Sucess!

Round-trip: 7 hours. Mandi basically ran up the thing while Doug, Matt, and I cruised along. Matt's poor dog had paw cuts that required us to put her in my pack so we could carry her down. Wonderful weather. A little nippy near the top of the south slope.

Great Success  Sucess!

Awesome weather meant crazy afternoon crowded trail, good thing our group of five left early enough.

Youngest at the time  Sucess!

Made the south ridge with five Mountaineers adults soon after my eighth birthday. I found it exhausting, and enjoyed the glissading back down the most fun, even though I had no ice axe and kept sliding all over the place roped to a parent above and below me.

I later became a Scout leader, Outward Bound instructor, and whitewater guide, and I'm sure the initial inspiration was the success of getting up the South Ridge at such a young age. The adults searched the register then and could find no previous climber younger than 10, so that was a source of pride for many years.

First real mountain  Sucess!

My first real experience with mountain climbing, this was my gateway to becoming a climber. Started at Devil's Lake and ascended via the South Ridge.
