Devils Lake/South Sister Trailhead  Sucess!

Solo hike. Left Devil's lake parking lot at 8am. Very windy with maybe a foot of snow on the summit push, so relaxed my pace and talked with a few other hikers near Lewis Glacier Lake and let the wind die down a bit. 12.4 mi round trip.

with Wasatch Mountain Club group  Sucess!

almost entirely on snow - evidence of the huge winter snowpack. This was one of the most awesome summit views I've experienced!

Hot day, 100F in Maupin  Sucess!

7 hrs C2C, nearly slid into Teardrop Pool, a really pretty summit volcano lake, and cold! Hot day, over 90F on the way down, hundreds hiking it all along, a very difficult hike, but an easy climb. Lucked out, could even see Hood and Thielsen.

Tough hike at the end coming down with all the scree. Make sure you do the whole loop at the summit. Beautiful views.

Trail from Devil's Lake  Sucess!

Got dropped off at Devil's Lake trailhead around 10 am. Good number of people on the mountain, many who didn't know the first thing about trail etiquette. There was some snow and ice near the top but it was easily negotiated. Basically a slog for the last 2,000 feet. Played in the lake after the hike. 5 hours round trip.

Wheeee screeeee  Sucess!

Camped overnight at Devils Lake, hit the trail at 7:15 (parking lot almost full on a Friday), got up to the summit around 11:30. Mosquitoes not as bad as expected, but scree just as bad or worse than anticipated - quite the slog, combined with the altitude! Pretty great views from the summit though and some fun glissading/plunge-stepping in the snow on the way down to save the knees!

Devils Lake TH  Sucess!

I pulled in to the Devils Lake TH parking lot around 2 a.m. At that point the lot was about 2/3 full. By the time I was up and walking at 8:30 a.m., the lot was overflowing and vehicles were parked up and down the highway.

At 6900' I encountered 3 state police officers who were part of a larger group running SAR drills. I stopped and talked to them for a good 20-30 minutes. Once I was on my way again, I met 10-15 other officers who had been participating in the drills on their way down.

Once at 9000', I began to encounter the masses -- both ascending and descending -- all of whom had clearly gotten an earlier start than me. It was pretty busy for a Thursday. I cannot imagine how full this trail gets on the weekends. Part of this is accounted for by the straightforward and easy-to-follow trail as well as the nontechnical demands; South Sister may be more fun and certainly less crowded in the snow.

I took the entirety of the crater ridgeline counterclockwise. There is an abundance of top-notch bivy spots if you are so inclined to spend the night up there. I was at the summit by noon and spent a solid hour before heading back down. The views were spectacular: Middle & North Sister, as well as Three-Fingered Jack, Jefferson, Hood, and Adams were all clearly identifiable.

With an uneventful descent, I was back at the car by 4.

Felt like I was carrying rocks  Sucess!

Beautiful outing, classic view but a pathetic effort. Had no energy at all, took over 5 hours to summit. Was warned about terrible mosquitos but they were only in the trees and not even that bad. Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous!

You're not an Oregonian unless you've done South Sister!  Sucess!

My 5th or 6th South Sister climb. I used to do it every year, but I grew tired of the crowds. It's not bad if you can get an extremely early start.

Some of the best summit views in Oregon.
