More snow this year than last. Was hoping to go even earlier for more snow, but my schedule and conditions never quite aligned. Love the views from this peak.

Mahogany SE Ridge
Be prepared for a pretty brutal ascent up to the top of the ridge, and the return decent. That said, there are probably few places you could go to get those types of views. There were breathtaking views of Mt. Timpanogos, in its entirety, to the East, and fantastic views of Utah Valley to the West. This seemed like a very good time to attempt this hike. The heat was not overbearing, and much of the grass and brush was brown and still matted from the snow, making the final push to the summit much easier. Had to pass through a few minor snow fields, but nothing major. Will definitely consider doing this again, perhaps a little earlier on when there is more snow.

Long Loop
I took the ridge up, but I tend to not like that route going down, both for safety reasons and because I don't want to kick a bunch of loose scree down on the other hikers near the bench. So for extra fun I decided to work my way over to the Timpooneke (sp?)Road at the North East end of Sagebrush Flats. I normally will work my way toward the Southeast end to save time and be more direct, but I took a wider loop this time. I am always amazed at how difficult it is to cross Sagebrush Flats--so much bushwhacking!

I read Dean's route page and figured I'd give it a shot. The first couple hundred yards up the scree directly above the bench on the trail was moderately miserable, but definitely doable. Once past the scree, stick to the top of the ridge, a faint game trail can be followed. Navigate around to the east side of the cliff bands to reach to the south summit of Mahagony. Once on the ridge, you'll have to routefind through gambel oak. Stinging nettle in places was about seven feet high. Luckily, the grasses and undergrowth was brown making it easier to walk through. Once past the gambel oak and aspen, you'll have a pleasant ridge walk to the summit.

Part trail, part cross country
I truly enjoyed this route. I'd like to do it again when the snow is gone to see what it is like and when I do so, I'll add the differences I find to this route page.
