Brutal on the knees  Sucess!

My dog and I hiked up from the north side which is basically up the lava flow. It was brutal. We came down the west side on a well traveled trail. It took us less than 10 minutes to decend. It's pretty cool up there. You can camp here but not within a quarter of a mile of water.

First Volcano   Sucess!

Cool hike. It's like climbing up a pile of vegetated gravel. The hard rock section to get on the rim of the crater could be challenging for a very timid climber.

Great Views  Sucess!

What a beautiful piece of land the Babbitt's own! Gorgeous views all-around, black lava field to the North and Humphrey's Peak to the South. Quick hike but so worth it. Going back down was so much fun too!

Nice Day Hike  Sucess!

25 years of hiking in Flagstaff...my first time on this popular crater. Nice hike, started around 2pm with my 7 year old son, Ty. We quickly summited (see below), walked around the perimeter of the cone, had a snack then descended around 4pm. It was Saturday, saw 3 other vehicles and a few other hikers.

I actually parked on the western side of SP on the saddle of the next cone west (followed a double track road from the north actually circumferences SP). My Toyota needed "low" to creep up the steep, slippery slope but it probably saved us half the climb.

Nothing much to note..several cairns around the top crater. One LARGE one on the north end, thought it might be gravesite for someone's pet or something...or someone just got ambitious and stacked a bunch of rocks. Also (like Strawberry Crator) a windbreak, but I'll bet it was recently made as well.

With Geology Class  Sucess!

Hiked up SP for a geology lab at NAU. Crazy views and cool little volcano. Lots of interesting rocks up there and the crater is quite nice too. Had a nice view of Humphrey's, with snow on it!

Crater Encounter  Sucess!

A very instructive hike. The black lava flow that snakes over the plain from the crater is impressive.

I've climbed this one on a couple of occasions. It's always very peaceful up there
