Base camped between Shaler and Faxon Lakes and hiked to the summit with RDB. Beautiful day and saw mountain goats on the ridge between us and the summit. Luckily, they let us pass. Hail and rain on the descent, but followed by sun and blue sky. Nice short and easy route to the summit and back. Nobody else up in that part of the basin on this morning. Naturalist Basin is spectacular!

Route climbed: Rock Creek Route
After ascending Ostler Peak, continued along the ridge for an attempt on Spread Eagle before being chased off towards Gladys Lake by t-storms. Made Spread Eagle's summit the next morning. Skeeters were thick at times, but a great couple of days and not a soul around once the trails were left behind!

Hailstones & Damnation
Intended to climb Spread Eagle from Naturalist Basin, then proceed west along the ridge to Agassiz and then dive off to the NW and reconnect with the Highline Trail. (I did this in summer 2004.) But a wild storm hit me just as I summitted and pelted me with stinging hail. The accompanying electrical activity convinced me to return the way I came. The bonus was a bagful of Boletus Edulis (very tasty wild mushroom) that I gathered on the way out. Yumm.

Was a great day, but I got caught on top by a thunderstorm and had an interesting descent. On the hike out the serious storms hit, but I made it out OK. This is really a beautiful mountain in a spectacular setting. I wish the Uintas weren't so far from home.
