Michael and I set out to climb the highest point of West Virginia and Maryland this day. The fall colors were close to peak around here. The drive up the gravel forest road enchanted us with the pure nonstop yellows. It did seem like a long drive.

Route Climbed: Main Trail from Parking Lot Date Climbed: October 15, 2002  Sucess!

It was an easy hike from the parking lot to the summit despite the cold drizzle that blanketed the region. The loop trail around the summit "knob" reminds me of "home" back in the Colorado high country. The rocky outcrops with the pine trees are common features in Colorado's Rocky Mountains. On clear days, the view from here is spectacular. I always enjoy visiting Spruce Knob. Some day I would like to take the trail to make it a legitimate climb.

very windy at the top. My little pickup truck was rocking in the wind. I came up the back road from the north. This was my 3rd state highpoint for the day.

State highpoint #9. It can get very windy and cold on the summit. Most of the trees have leaves on one side only due to the constant wind. There is an observation tower with great 360 degree views of the surrounding hills.
