I was in DC for some meetings and wanted to pick up the 3 state highpoints in the area so I did a whilwind tour of WV, PA, and MD.
My family was on vacation in nearby Black Water Falls State Park and decided to climb this mountain. Actually did it in reverse. Since we could not find a hiking trail on the drive up, we started at the top, hiked down and then back up to our car.
Beautiful park. It was 75F and breezy at the top, probably 95F in the valley. Highly recommend the side trip to Spruce Knob Lake. The dogs had a great time swimming in it!
Great views from the top and the drive down was entertaining.
Beautiful views, great day. Awesome time with my hiking buddy.
Beautiful Views after a long drive up to the top. We could easily see rain storms to the West.
Easy summer walk. Beautiful clear day and some wide ranging views.
Beautiful day for HP 15 and 3rd for that day.
My dog Spanky and I made it to the top of Spruce Knob on a cold, cloudy, and snowy morning. For a complete trip report pls go to http://50summits.blogspot.com
Hat trick achieved...
3 out of 3 in the same day...
I have to give credit for the ascent to my Toyota truck. It did all the work! Been here many times.
to many times to count.....followed by Seneca Rocks play days
A recent snow storm made the drive to the top an adventure. There was quite a bit of snow above about 4,000 feet. The short walk to the summit tower was nice with the trees to block the wind. Once at the tower the winds and below freezing temperatures made it feel like the middle of January - not October.
Last day of a weeklong trip. Conference in Cleveland, surprised by the beauty of Ohio. Spruce Knob was 5th state and 25th county HP of the trip. Wonderful views; Mt Porte Crayon, Weiss Knob, Potomac valley and the Alleghany front. What a beautiful country we live in. Now over to my last county at Snowshoe and then the 300+ mile trip home (2100+ miles for the week) May take awhile to do the state HP's (Took me 17 years to do #20), too many places to go.
This was the first of three highpoints for the day (WV, MD, PA). It was a beautiful day! Clear, brisk, and windy. I had the entire summit to myself. Great views! HP #23.
Had tons of rain, so I wimped out and drove it. The walk to the lookout and area was wet. Would like to go back someday!
Long drive through winding roads.. Does this state have a straight road anywhere? :)
That WV mud sticks like crazy, went to my uncle's house afterwards and hosed off all I could while he was at work. When he got home he said, "That's awful dirty, you should use my hose and wash it off."
HP #2. First of the "Highpoint Trifecta" of West Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania. Left from Virginia Beach at 6:00 am and didn't see one cloud all day!
Drove up and walked the short path to the tower to enjoy the view. Nice change of pace between climbing Seneca Rocks and the Nelson Rocks Via Ferrata. Beautiful "Almost Heaven" country.
