SE rib scramble / south rib descent + rattlesnake  Sucess!

Headed up the SE rib (good game trail along the right side of the creek), avoiding the bigger rock towers to keep it to mostly class 2 with a tiny bit of class 3. Super steep and lots of loose rock, but doable! Hiked along the ridge road to make it to the south summit, backtracked to the southernmost lookout tower and kept heading further south to make it down that rib. Ran into a grumpy rattlesnake that scared the daylights out of me before we began descending the slope (steep, lots of sidehilling, kind of a pain). Good hike all around!

Nice Afternoon Workout  Sucess!

The girlfriend, and I woke up at about 9 am on a Saturday morning and decided to go hike up Squaw. It took about 2 hours round trip. The SE Rib provided some fun scrambling.

Great afternoon  Sucess!

Hiked up the SE face with my two brothers and a friend. There was a light amount of snow falling at the start of the climb, but nothing accumulated. Had a good time climbing around some of the cool rock features. At the summit, the clouds were loaded up on the east face and curling over the top. Pretty neat!

Sunday morning hike  Sucess!

What a great peak! Snowed on us a bit at the start but the weather was sublime at the summit. Hiked up the southeast face and around the west side of the giant rock face. Turned out to be quite challenging with a vertical climb of 2800'. Not even an hour away from Nampa. Great hike. Bring boots! Keep on the lookout for Mary Jane.

So Close, And Like a Real Mountain  Sucess!

I started with the SE Rib route with two 10 month old Golden Retrievers. It took a little bit to find the jeep trail as I started the hike upon the first creek crossing vs. the 2nd. It was just one ridge over. Minimal snow, just a few fields towards the top and the North facing ridges. Little soggy but not too bad. About 3/4 way up and picking the two dogs up to lift them onto a ledge we traversed to the upper part of the gully to make the top. Smart move on this day. The rib route would probably be more doable without dogs and snow but would still be very challenging. Happy to find there was minimal wind on top which is a rarity for this Butte.

dry winter  Sucess!

very little snow turned this into more of a stroll than a hike. Drove to about 5200ft. No snowshoes needed. Still a nice area to visit.

Winter snowshoe  Sucess!

Low snow allowed for driving up the road further than usual. This may not have been in January, but seemed like it was. Nice snowshoe to the top with plenty of winter wind on a sunny day.

Drive Up  Sucess!

Drove up to the lookout, and out to the north end of the road. I walked out Squaw Butte proper from the end of the road and picked up my first tick of the year along the way. Tackled the Payette and Ada County highpoints after this one.

Great Day!  Sucess!

Climbed with Splattski. The day was a little stormy off and on but it was fun. We took a route up a steep gully through the rocks on the east face (we kind of called it the Splattybumpo or the Mtybumpski route.) Conditions were a bit slippery in places but the rock/snow/ice/ combo made it seem more alpine, plus we were home in time for lunch!

Cold Day  Sucess!

Picked the most direct line up the SE rib/face I could see... had a great climb. It got colder than I thought it would and there were some fun moves at the top/crux. Good winter climb/hike.

Great!  Sucess!

A very good hike indeed! Did this on "a spur of the moment".
Did the SE ridge. Lots of lose rock in the "class 3+ section." Found a "safe route" to the top... Lots of flys at this time, and when I wanted to take a break, it kept me moving!

Growing Stuff  Sucess!

Snow-shoed up from Spring Creek to the SE Rib- steep snow and rock- tough with snoe-shoes until the ridge where it was just deep snow and windy cold. Follow the south ridge down (easier). My first peak in 2 months (back injury). An old man (redneck) stopped at our car and questioned what we were doing there. He said they had some marijuana found growing in the area and he owned the road! (It was a public road). We told him we'd keep an eye out for them damn hippies and then I asked him if he wanted to get high.
