Hard ice, fun route, solo  Sucess!

I soloed the St Jean Couloir on good water ice in late October of 1998. The route in hard ice conditions, is probably the fastest way to get to the top of Split Mountain. Descended the North Ridge to Red Lake.

Fun, steep, not so hard  Sucess!

Topped out in a late-season blizzard in an incredibly low-snow year. I was glad to have two tools on one ice bulge near the bottom, but neve and crunchy semi-fresh snow elsewhere made the rest cruiser. Cloud-cover kept it from getting soft. Trip report.

St. Jean couloir  Sucess!

With Max. A soft snow slog with a couple of mixed moves low down to overcome a hollow snow section over a step. Start this thing early if it's warm - the sun bakes it as soon as it rises.

Climb and ski descent  Sucess!

Perfect conditions. Snow was mostly hardpacked for easy kick stepping. Some parts were still deep snow. Didn't have to use my crampons, just ice axe. Ski down was fun as well. The sketchiest part was probably the cornice on top.
