Stapina from Cankove Njivice

Cankove Njivice meadows in autumn. Behind is Stapina (1125m), lonely 100m high cliff. This is just one of many such beautiful spots along the seaboard terrace of South Velebit. October 1999. Photo: Aleksandar Gospic

Re: Another brightly colored picture

Yes, it is beech. I love it so much, my favourite deciduous tree. I would plant few around house but it would be too hot for it here. I always wondered how beech is represented in North America or where you live, if at all?

Thanks for the link, beautiful photo!

Re: Another brightly colored picture

Beech is well represented in the eastern U.S. This Grove is 30 miles from me but there are such groves less than 1/4 mile from. Unfortunately most of this has been converted to corn fields(Maize). Fagus Grandifolia(U.S.) has a lighter colored bark than Fagus Sylvatica(Euro). As you can see these are elegant woods that have been often replaced with degraded stuff. Bears can live in large hollow beech trees.
