Off-Trail Scramblin'
Hiked the cross-country route with MJ and Hillel. It was short in miles but made up for it with steep terrain, water crossings, snow fields, bush whacking, scree, loose talus, bouldering, and mosquitoes. This peak is my sixteenth Ogul Peak and left its mark with sunburn, scratches, and bug bites! We took a dirt road up from Hwy 88. From there, we took an offshoot of the road, crossed a creek, continued along the road for just a minute longer, then started walking up the creek. From there we bushwhacked up to where snow started covering the drainage. We stayed on the west (left) side of the drainage, in the trees and snow, until the snow over the drainage looked firm and flat enough to cross safely. We then crossed over to the east side of the drainage and walked up toward the peak. The scree was tiring, but then we got into talus. After some sturdy talus we encountered some icky loose scree/talus mix. That was close to my limit, I did not want to go sliding down with a bunch of rocks. Hillel scouted ahead, and the rocks got stable again. We were able to scramble up (class 2 / maybe easy class 3) to the summit. Signed the register, ate snacks, took pics, and then headed down the more popular route toward Red Lake Peak instead of trying to move down the loose rock. Once we got to the saddle we glissaded down the snow, then eventually met back up with the route we took up. Mosquitoes were out in full force by then. Fun day!

2X with Red Lake Peak
From Carson Pass, with my brother. Wound up not needing the snowshoes, but the microspikes helped for traction on the steep exposed slopes just under the summit of Red Lake Peak. Continued on to Stevens for the OGUL double.

Crater Lake Loop with Red Lake Peak from Hope Valley
Hiked up with my dogs in the snow from the pullout near Road 91/Alhambra Mine Road/Alpine Mine Road along HWY 88 in Hope Valley to the outlet on the east shore of Crater Lake. We then headed northwest up the melted out ridge north of the lake to join the partially snowy normal south ridge route from Red Lake Peak to Stevens. I thoroughly enjoyed traversing the ridge north to Red Lake Peak with partial snow coverage after tagging Stevens. We looped down the northeast slopes of Red Lake Peak, waving at Crater Lake to our left on the way back to the parking area along HWY 88. I saw no other visitors on a Monday, but lots of ski tracks and a few snowshoe tracks in the bowls and gullies of both peaks from the weekend.

With Red Lake Peak
Christmas hike of Red Lake followed by Stevens starting from the Carson Pass Sno Park. Somewhat tricky summit block on Red Lake, went up the false summit blocks first only to have redo the climb on the correct blocks. Could not locate register on Red Lake, but found one on Stevens. Tried to hook up with the TRT and PCT off of Stevens but wound up in snowshoe hell for 3 hours trying to get back to the Sno Park. Trip report is HERE.

Fun!!!
Quick trip that was surprisingly fun - we took the direct scramble route up past the Easter Island rock and then dropped down off the basin on the north side. Nice deep plunge steps halfway back to the car.
Climbed in conjunction with Red Lake Peak and Pickett Peak on a scorchingly hot summer afternoon.

Traverse from Red Lake Pk
Made the mistake of going around the southeast of the plateau between Red Lake and Stevens. Very loose dirt and rock on that side. At the summit at 9:30am and took the trail on the northwest going back, much better- back to car at 11:45, a little over 5 hours for both peaks. Enjoyed the day.
