From Red box. I started at 7am before it got too hot, passed a lot of people on the way back down. Great hike!
It was 72 in my hometown Monrovia but there was lingering snow patches on the summit. Just a perfect day. It really is one of the most rewarding summits in the San Gabriels.
Hiked from Red Box with my wife and the two kids. Great last mile up to the peak. Gorgeous day with views from the top all the way to the ocean.
Took the herd path from the Colby Canyon Trail. The Canyon was DRY and it was hot for April, but the rocky section up top was fun. Not too difficult either. On the way down I ran into a rattler. Scarry!
climbed strawberry in feb 06, good climb and good company!
Nice class 3, though the purple arrows detract slightly.
This was one of my first hikes in the San Gabriels, have hiked it 3 or 4 times, along with Josephine. Have always wanted to mt. bike it but haven't made it yet.
My goal for the year was to climb 25 of the Sierra Clubs hundred peaks and this was trip No.1. We ascending via Colby Canyon to Josephine saddle and up along the ridge. The class three climbs were a bit initimading in the insane fog (visbility 15-ft), but it was quite surreal and beautiful at the same time. This is one hike I plan to do again.
Hiked up Colby canyon/West Ridge. This hike is awesome, the scarmabling was great. Hiked with Mike(gigamike), good times!
Second time on Strawberry peak. Took a break from the snow and tried some class 3 scrambling. Tons of fun! Very nice day with little wind! There are still patches of snow on the north side.
I went down the East Ridge.
Got it on the third time. First time it was sweltering and I ran out of water. Second I couldn't convince my hiking partner to go for more than 30 minutes. Nice hike.
Can't remember the day, spring 2004 climbe from Redbox. Fun hike,
A good winter hike. It snowed on my friend Jim and I early on Super Bowl Sunday a few years ago.
5 AM drive from UCLA for a 6 AM hike
greeting Helios in the early morn with a resounding hello
lovely mountain echoes
sweaty backs, well-used legs
a well-loved trail
returning to a still snoozling roommate
and oh, the beauty of the San Gabriels...!
Clear day and early morning start up Colby Canyon. The stream and waterfalls were all flowing well. Reached Josephine Saddle and started up the ridgeline towards Strawberry Peak. Still patches of snow in the covered areas. Reached the base of Strawberry and followed the well known purple arrows to the summit. Nice view but low clouds moved in quickly from the southwest. Decided to return via east ridge to Red Box.
Cloudy at home, but plenty of sunshine above the clouds... Great views of Baldy and San Jacinto from the top.
Gotta love an icy class 3 ridge. Circled the mountain and passed through Camp Colby on the way up to ascend Red Box. This made the hike about 14.5 miles round trip.
This is the only route to a summit in the San Gabriel front range that I know of that has sections of 3d class rock. I've done this route many times and it is always fun. Today, our group did Josephine Peak first, then Strawberry, then Lawlor. From Strawberry, we could see that Baldy still has snow on it.
I had a good, first 3rd class experience. Check out my trip report if you want to hear what it was like for a beginner.
Beautiful day for a hike. Retrieved my son's lost pack.
