"After the first glass, you see things as you wish they were. After the second, you see things as they are not. Finally, you see things as they really are, which is the most horrible thing in the world."

Sunrise TrailFirst steeper hike with my husband EastKing. Little did I know that I would be doing Mt. Lafayette five years later.

Route Climbed: Sunrise Trail Date Climbed: 12/13/2005I spent the afternoon and early evening on Sugarloaf mountain to watch the sunset. It was very nice. It was a bit cold, but not unbearable. I actually hiked a bunch of trails around Sugarloaf, but only did about 4.5 miles of hiking in total. This is a nice destination for folks in the DC area. I first hiked on Christmas Day, 2004. This was my second time on the mountain. Photos are added to the page.

Route Climbed: Northern Peaks Trail and Sunrise Trail Date Climbed: 12/25/04Sugarloaf Mountain is pretty nice. It is a shame that it has so much better an organization of trails than the actual highpoint of Maryland (Backbone Mountain).
I did the Northern Peaks trail and covered about 10 miles of total hiking. I even did some rock climbing on my way to the summit. I started at the mountain entrance parking lot, and hiked up the white trail to the East View parking lot, and then did the Sunrise Trail. Afterwards I did the Northern Peaks trail. Very fun. 25 degrees, clear skies.

Route Climbed: Mountain Loop Trail, Multiple other routes Date Climbed: Summers 97-99A classic from my pre-New Hampshire days. Fun diversion from the D.C. area. I remember the Sunrise Trail well. It was good practice for later scrambles and hikes.

Route Climbed: Sunrise, A.M. Thomas and Monadnock Trails Date Climbed: Multiple TimesI have lived in Montgomery County, Maryland since the Summer of 1997 and have climbed Sugarloaf Mountain many times, winter, spring, summer and fall. I have summited many times, mostly by myself, but also with my kids when they were as young as 5. It has become a very special place of solitude for me, as well as a great place to train for some of the larger peaks I have climbed.
