Wonderful little trail
Fantastic views over Millard Canyon and Saucer Branch Falls, and oh so peaceful compared to Sam Merrill. The peace is stunning after a nice rain. Was shocked to see two mountain bikers trying to descend it, though... they could have easily hurt someone on the very narrow bends and washouts.
What a perfect starter hike. My husband and I have taken a break from hiking for a while and would like to get back to our previous fitness level. This hike definitely fit the bill. It was an overcast day and a bit windy and chilly at the top, but absolutely lovely nonetheless. We initially took the trail heading to dawn mine, although some previous flooding has damaged the trail leaving a lot of broken branches and boulders strewn across it. If hiking dawn mine be sure to bring sturdy waterproof shoes(mine came in handy). Boulderhopping also awaits you if you decide to take that trail, so be sure to calculate that into your estimated hiking time. We handn't anticipated the trail to be so unmaintained and didn't calculate that into our hiking time so we decided to do the Sunset Ridge trail instead. I loved the waterfalls, greenery, overcast day, and 900 foot elevation gain. I think this hike is an absolute treasure. It was nice to see the picnic tables at the top...perfect place for lunch. :)

Great Trail...
but watch out for the poison oak! I've hiked it many times, during the day as well as at night.

Scenic trail
Great and in my eyes more beautiful alternative to Lower Merril Trail up Echo Mountain. Done on a sunny and warm (~80F) day in February.

My favorite way to go to Echo Mountain. The Sunset Ridge Trail is a wonderful running trail.
