Svanetian Range

Svanetian Range

Svanetian Range, a 50-miler expanse of glaciated mountains topped with 4008 meter-high Layla, remains a nearly-unknown cousin of the larger Main Range of the Caucasus to the North. The picture was taken in 1982 from Tsanner Glacier, and the mystery kept bugging me until we returned for a thorough recon of Svanetian Range in 1988. With the post-Soviet breakdown of law and order in the realm of the unruly Svans, I was under impression that nobody visits Svanetian Range anymore. To my surprise, I recently learned that SP member Alexclimb guides to Layla.
