Sunny winter day  Sucess!

Beautiful sunny day. Was able to drive the rental car up a gravel road from Modric, and reached an elevation of about 900m. Then hiked to the mountain hut Dusice for a lunch break, then up to the summit. Nav was fun in some parts due to the snow cover. Walk up the Ridge to the top was great following the cornice. The cross had been destroyed and it's remnants scattered around. We returned via the same route. Excellent adventure!

Route Climbed: Velika Paklenica route  Sucess!

We started on day before from Velika Paklenica around 11.00 hrs, along Paklenica mountain hut and stayed over night at Ivine Vodice refuge. The next day we climbed straight to Cicina dolina and than right towards Sveto Brdo. Unfortunatelly it was very cloudy on the summit, so we couldn't enjoy the panoramic veiw. We descended via Vlaski Grad refuge, again to the Ivine Vodice, and further to Velika Paklenica. It was a great experiance!

via Modric route  Sucess!

Started late (around 13:00) on a day before, and spent night in Vlaski grad refuge. Beautiful day without any wind.
Bura started in the morning, on the way up from Vlaski grad to Sveto Brdo, and blowing very hard on the way down, especially on Libinje plateau, at the afternoon.
A long walk....especially when you're alone, like I was.
Hard snow and ice above 1400 meters. Very nice view from the top.

Route Climbed: Modric route, Debelo Brdo variation Date Climbed: January 31st 2004  Sucess!

This was my 'who knows which' time to climb Sveto Brdo. I guess number is somewhere between 10 and 15. Strangely last time I stood on its summit 2 and half years ago. Guess that I’ve been occupied by other parts of Velebit. This time one day up/down marathon was on the menu. With friend Nino did it via Modric route, Debelo Brdo variation. 3 years ago was last time I climbed via this route which almost made me forget how tough it is. This is long and difficult one day task even for long spring/summer days with 1850m of vertical gain and loss, which brings it close to 4km! We started from Modric at 8.30h and with furious tempo reached edge of Libinje plateau in 1.45h. Normally it takes 2.30h. Snow began 30mins below Libinje, at some 550m of altitude which is quite low. In next hour we crossed Libinje on mostly hard snow and got to the foot of gigantic Debelo Brdo (1440m). It took us 2h to surmount it as we reached pass between 2 heads at 14h. In the upper half we had to put crampons as on places snow was hard packed and was impossible to penetrate it with boots. Over the ridge it took some 25mins to reach the foot of Sveto Brdo pyramid. There we became exposed to strong W wind, which I later saw blew 12m/s on average. Each gusts filled the air with snow and ice particles. Wind dropped wind chill considerable so last hour to the summit was really unpleasant. I reached the summit at 15.30h, 7h after departure from Modric. Of those 7h rests were around 45mins. Nino, who I call snow-plough because of devastating tempo he can hold even when falling through snow to the knee, reached the summit 20mins before me. Strong wind, cold (-7°C) and drifting snow on the summit prevented deserved joy after so much suffering. I saw Nino descending well below on the other side of summit, as he escaped from the elements. I spend 5mins up there taking shots with frozen hands and began running down. We met some 30mins below summit and continued together towards marked Modric route and reached it at half way point between Libinje plateau & Vlaski Grad refuge. I forgot to say how weather and visibility were clear and beautiful all day except wind on the summit. As we headed towards Libinje Sun slowly sank and Velebit turned red. At sunset (17h) we stopped to enjoy it and to finally eat. Because of furious all day tempo this was first time I eat since departing from home at 7am. I was hungry so much that I felt I was even going to eat the foil in which sandwiches were wrapped. After all the amazing sights we saw during the day sunset was in its own league. Even today I’m still amazed by it and I will be as long as I remember. Apart from colors which were incredible main story was best visibility I ever had! As Sun went down Apennines in Italy which are across Adriatic Sea, 270km (170miles) away, appeared as if there was no atmosphere at all. I think this visibility could be compared to what Hubble has in the orbit! There was no particle of dust or humidity in the air, nothing, as you are in the vacuum. Huge mountain that is even further away from Corno Grande (2912m) towards south was visible. That one was probably 300km/186miles away. After 45mins of well deserved rest we continued down at 17.45h. Half Moon provided beautiful light on snow. Atmosphere was surreal with countless lights beyond the moonlit mountain. Again over Libinje plateau we descend back to car and got there at 21h, which would be 4.45h from Sveto Brdo without rest. It was yet another amazing day on Velebit but this one goes straight to list of legendary ones.
