Longer day than expected. Socked in the clouds, so no summit view. Bummer.
With a group of 14ers.com members, Kessler and I climbed Tabeguache Peak. We camped along the road above the Angel of Shavano Campground.
After a mild, but windy night we drove to the trailhead and set off up the mountain. There wasn’t as much snow as expected, so we left the snowshoes, behind (which turned out to be a good move).
We made our way rather quickly up the mountain and up to the west ridge of Tabeguache. The going was pretty tedious with all the scree fields from there on. There wasn’t much snow on the route and I had carried a bunch of gear for nothing, including face masks, microspikes, extra coats, etc.
Strangely, the ridge was much more windy than the summit. After enjoying the fine October views, we headed back down the mountain and back home.
Second peak of the day with Shavano. Long day but great fun. Climbed with Dustin Kelley.
A bit of a slog to and from, but not a big deal.
Not my favorite pair in the Sawatch, but still a nice hike.
It takes less than an hour to get this one from Shavano. Go Up!
Very windy, used the remaining snow on the ridge.
Traversed from Shavano...got a nice glissade on the east slopes.
Bushwhacked from the main trail up the gulch - still a viable route for sure! After doing Shavano twice in as many years, I was glad to get this one done another way. Here's the trip report.
when we got there on the 8th SAR was pulling someone off the Angel after the lost control on a glissade. On our climb we could see the SAR tracks from the sled they used it was a good reminder of the importance of being careful even on 'easy' peaks
Traversed over from Shavano after climbing the Angel. All the spring snow made it a fun day in the mountains.
This TH is no longer open, so glad I got to see the scenery over there.
Combo with Shavano on a beautiful day.
Tagged Tabe`s summit after summiting Shavano in sunny and cool weather, great views.
Long hike from Blank's Cabin, over Shavano (for the second time) to bag Tab. Beautiful day with great views from the summit, and great fellowship with friends from Christ Church, including kilimanjaro1 (congrats, BJ).
Same to you Jeff! We all deserve a pat on the back for that one! Great time!
This was my 3rd time up Shavano, but first time to make it over to Tabeguache. Hiked with a group of church friends and ran into tons of Cross Country climbers from Kansas. Great weather and a great day to finally bag this- my final 14er to bag in the Sawatch.
