Via South Ridge Trail
Fabulous views, gorgeous forests, and solitude -- at least on the way up. What's not to like? One note of caution: The dirt road was very rough and I got a flat tire in my low clearance vehicle. I didn't see any notes on the poor quality of the road in any of the guides I checked, so thought I'd mention it.

South Ridge Trail
Originally started at Humber Park, but were turned back by the hard snow & ice. Then drove to the South Ridge Trail Head (which has a locked gate about a mile before it). Still plenty of hard snow, but without the steep slopes. Encountered a ranger who let us know we needed a permit, but let us go anyway (nice guy). With Larry & Carol.

snow climb
Climbed up the drainage from Humber Park to intersect the snow-covered trail just north of the peak. Had to wear crampons for about half of the time. Returned via PCT and Devil's Slide trail and it was much faster.

From Devil's Slide
Didn't choose the best day for views, but fog and wind kept everyone except another group of hikers away. Really cold at summit, nonetheless the hike was enjoyable and get me the chance to test a new parka. Continued on PCT to Red Tahquitz.

long day
Trail run from humber park to caramba camp then over to tahquitz. Met up with friends there and hiked to red tahquitz and back down devils slide. Saw a nice sized buck between saddle and laws camp. Nice long day.
Did it on a lark after sleeping in until really late down in Idyllwild. Nice day, fun walk up.
