Early Morning
Called ahead and found out they give out only 100 permits to hike the gorge floor. We were told that by 7:30 there would likely be a line of 200 people at the gate. We decided to go for it. Being an hour away, and wanting to get there early enough to get a permit, we decided to hit the road at 5:00 am. We were in fact, the first (and only) people at the gate. :) But around 7:30 the line started to get longer and there ended up being around 80 people by the time the doors opened. After our instructions course, we signed waivers and headed down the gorge. Wonderful day for hiking. Not too cold or hot, although a little overcast. Got to slide on sliding rock down at the far end of the gorge. The turnaround back at the top was confusing as to where to cross the highway, but we figured it out. Many cool lookout points on our way back.

Excellent Climbing
Mary and I made a detour to Tallulah Gorge on our way to climb at Tennessee Wall. We started on Mescaline Daydream (5.8, 2 pitches) and really enjoyed it. Excellent rock and protection, although it took me a while to get used to the steepness after climbing out west for the last year. We rappelled and finished the afternoon with Primitive Paradox (5.9, 2 pitches), which is an absolutely fantastic climb. The drive to Chattanooga was beautiful with the fall colors and we stopped at the AT crossing for a short visit with an old friend.

Very scenic, hot in summer
Hiked during a heat wave in 2005. Went across the suspension bridge but didn't make it to the bottom.

small day hike
My wife and I stopped by on our way home from the NC mountains. It was about 4:30 on a Sunday and it was strangely cool for GA in June. The bottom of the canyon was beautiful; didn't get to cross the river at the bottom-- I'll have to go back sometime and explore the rest of the gorge. The incredible view is definitely worth the trip.

Sliding Rock
Hiked from the Jane Hurt Yarn center down to the floor of the gorge and then downstream past all the falls to the sliding rock. Fun place to explore and swim.
Doing a lot of camping and hiking in Rabun County all my life, I've been to the gorge more times than I can remember. I usually stop at the small shop that sits at the edge of the rim on old historic 441. Nothing beats a Moon Pie and an ice cold RC Cola on the porch overlooking the gorge and falls.
I've only been to the floor once on trail the runs on the north side of the Tallulah River.
Route Climbed: Hurricane Falls Trail. Date Climbed: 10-22-2005
Although I had been to the rim of the Gorge once before, some years ago, this was the first time I had a chance to hike down to the floor. From the Jane Hurt Yarn Center down to Hurricane Falls is a drop of about 700 feet in 1/4 mile. Although on a boardwalk/staircase, it still offers plenty of spectacular views along the way.
