all three separate summits
Up from the parking lot and all along the ridge to Calloway. The ladders and cables made the icy parts more manageable.

Great hike!
Great hike from the swinging bridge up to Calloway peak up the Grandfather Trail, then took a different vantage point down taking the Underwood Trail. Great hike, looking forward to going back!

This was clearly pre-EastKing. This is the only summit I did before I met EastKing. My father and I struggled to get this summit.

going tomorrow
Hiking up tomorrow looking for advice on profile Or Scout for winter climbing? Done both in summer but wondering if profile ices up..... Any advice?
Well went up the scout trail after about 2 " of snow. Great trip. Trail a bit hard to follow with the snow but it is pretty well marked so easy to get back on track.
After about 2.5 MI. It gets pretty steep including a few ladders and a scramble up a rock that is pretty slick in the snow.
Made it to the peak with spectacular views. Started down the grandfather trail but just too treacherous in the snow so turned around.

Calloway Peak
Went up the Crag way and Daniel Boone trails to Calloway Peak on a windy, rainy Friday. There were some pretty good views from the Cragway Trail, but it started raining about halfway up. Still worth the trip.
Hiked up Profile Trail and camped up on the ridge. The next morning we up to Calloway Peak, then out to Attic Window and MacRae Peak before heading back down Profile Trail. Beautiful views. Both trails were pretty steep, but Grandfather Mountain Trail was rugged enough that it would have been pretty difficult with backpacks.

Profile Trail
Hiked up the Profile Trail to Calloway Pk, then took the Grandfather Tr. to the Visitor's Center just before the Swinging Bridge, and then back down the Profile Tr. Was 5 1/2 hrs. and 3,785' of gain, RT.

Profile Trail
Cold and windy, with lots of snow. No views, but a great hike. Finished the southeast peaks with 2000 feet of prominence on this one. Will have to repeat this one in nice weather.
Hiked the ridge many times in the 13 years I've lived here. Absolutely classic traverse for the Eastern US. Class 3 scrambling and amazing views, and don't forget the hidden subway!
Sometime when I was young, my family took me here. All I could remember was the swinging bridge. I have since been back. Awesome area.

Partial Success
First be advised that the prices to enter have changed -
$15 adult, $7 child and $13 senior.
Pulling up to the entrance a big sign advised "ALL trails closed due to ice conditions".
Thus my partial success of driving the roadway and walking across the "Mile High Bridge".

Route: Boone Scout Trail
Couldn't see much of anything on the summit due to heavy cloud cover other than the subpeak to the north. Still a very fun climb for this area of the country.

Profile trail
This is my second time hiking Grandfather Mnt., the first time I went up the Daniel Boone Scout Trail, which I prefer over the Profile Trail.
First time June 1994, second time June 1995. Foggy both times, but it cleared up top the first time. It's a nice, scenic mountain but is somewhat spoiled by the private park located there and the views of development taking over the surrounding area.

Profile Trail- December 08
Hiked up the profile trail at night and camped at alpine meadow backpack site. No views because of thick clouds, but a fun hike and good night camping up top.

Grandfather Trail to Calloway Peak
Set out from Black Rock trailhead up to the swinging bridge; then on to Calloway Peak and back. Loved it; incredible place; fully deserves International Biosphere Reserve recognition. A few things I could have wished for: a surrounding national wilderness, less climbing restrictions, and no climbing implements (such as ladders and cables)-- oh yeah, and national ownership.

bouldering
the bridge is nice and the summit views are awesome, but my trips to the area are for the climbing. 221 boulders, beacon heights, grandmother. the climbings out of this world!
i have to agree with bobsmiths entry though, looking at banner elk, and the new giant hotel you can see for miles reminds you of the horrible path were all walking, soon all of the prestine wilderness we enjoy will be viewed through glass walls and picture books.
