Highly recommend parking at the large gravel turnout 1/4 mile west of the gate on the south side of Highway 18. This does necessitate approaching from the west, but it means you don't have to cross the highway (very dangerous), or risk getting your car towed at the gate. I don't know if it's strictly legal to park there, but I didn't see any 'No Parking' signs, and I've seen trucks park there in the past.
