Wonderful day to climb Rogers, Bennet, and then Telescope. Windy (of course), probably 20 degree chill, but sunny. Very fun!
Standard trail from Mohogany Flat. Very clear, great views from the San Bernadinos to White Mtn. Peak and east to the Spring Mtns. west of Las Vegas.
Did Telescope Peak a couple of years ago in September with my buddy Richard after camping a Mahogany Flats. It was beautiful sunny days, not too hot, with a cool breeze on top (had tp put my fleece on. I forgot to re-apply my sunscreen and burned my legs pretty badly (the skin peeled off in one piece a week later). We slept at Mahogany the night after the climb and had to bail early in the morning (still dark) when a really bad storm came in. Some dude we met on our way down the day before wanted to camp out on top to watch the stars. Hope he was okay in the storm.
for a hike from Mahogany Flats......Easy summit....Views were great except for a little haze..Unable to see Mt. Whitney....Perfect time of year for a hike at altitude in Death Valley.......But it was HOT back down below sea level......Also, something in the air (pollen?) made my skin welt and eyes swell......Had to get some Benadryl at Stove Pipe Wells.......Great hike overall.
did it from Shorty's Well and attempted some unknown West Ridge.
After seeing Telescope from Badwater, I've wanted to do this peak for a decade or so. I finally took the easy stroll up to the top from Mahogany Flats this summer. Whew, hot!
I have been up Telescope several times in the past thirty years by different routes, once from near Bad Water (see trip report) and as strange this this may sound, while I was there as a seasonal ranger, we put on a 3-day snow rescue course for rangers in the Mahogany Flats area (I built an igloo there for sleeping in) and climbed Telescope later. Remarkable area.
Camped the night before at Mahogany Flats, 4 hours up and 3 hours down the next day. Summit was surrounded by clouds so we didn't get to see the awesome view.
We camped at Mahogany Flats with the wind and did the hike during a little snow storm. It was a very cloudy day but there was no haze and it was pretty cold up high. No other people were seen until we got to the car.
Quite surprised by the winds and clouds on the way to the summit. High Sierra were engulfed in clouds. Very nice trail and excellent views, but the summit/trail was somewhat crowded. Mahogany Flat CG is quite pleasant.
Just returned home from a successful hike up Telescope Peak. Hazy day limited the view, but could still see down into Death Valley easily.
From campsite at Mahogany Flats. Perfect day - still some snow up high. Lots of forest fire smoke obscured view of the Sierra. Awesome desert peak - a favorite.
I do not remember the exact date. Two guys on the (rather remote) summit were drinking beer and a woman with an enormous hip-pack filled primarily with popcorn was not restraining her flatulence. Later that evening at the campground, a crazed woman intentionally drove her car at high speed down the mountainside and then disappeared from the accident site, thus necessitating the arrival of a search and rescue team. Odd.
Nice hike, but we didn't make the top. There was more snow than we had anticipated, up to a few feet in places. Hike provides great views of valley, however.
It would seem everyone climbs this one. Snow on the ground and screaming winds. Fun day with Evan. Trip Report
Way too windy on the ridge past Rogers and Bennett to finish this in one day. Had to snowshoe in about a mile south of Charcoal.
CLIMBED WITH LVMC
Got to the top twice...great views from up there.
Fun hike... a nice way to escape the valley heat in May. Was interesting to be melting in 115 deg F temperature at Badwater one day and hiking through snow the next day.
