No axe, ha ha. There's nothing here steep enough on MK that would require an axe, even with snow. I would love to head back some day in the winter to ski it, though.

contrast!The clarity of this picture is intense, the red on blue is out of this world. I was awe-struck when I was up there.

Re: contrast!It's not really too bad. It's a healthy amount of miles and elevation gain, but it's really easy and there's a great trail all the way. The scenery was so unique that we didn't notice the time go by. I think we did it from 10am-4pm, or something like that. It sucks up a whole day on your trip, but I'd say it's totally worth it.

Re: contrast!thats not as bad as I thought then. I have heard people really complain about it. Maybe they did another route. Either way it seems like it would be a great experience. Not that Mauna Kea wasn't, but its wierd getting to the top of a mountain and seeing telescopes
