The Arctic Ocean that way!

View NNE from Sputnik Plateau (1233 m), Arctic Ural mountains. Sputnik, the 2nd highest muntain between the headwaters of Little Kara and Little Usa, harbors several glaciers in its cirques, including Arctic Ural's longest, a mile+ Moscow University Glacier. You can glimpse a bit of Little Pike Lake (nearly 5 miles long despite its name) down in the center of the picture. On the far shore of the lake, a high escarpment rises above rugged glacial cirques. Count the spur ridges from the right to the left. The first two are very steep. The third from the right looks skiable. That's the route we took from Great Pike Lake basin the day before (a Peak 1,090 variation of Krutoy Pass). A maze of short mountain ranges, gradually becoming less rugged and lower in elevation as the mountains fade towards Baydaratskaya Guba Bay of Kara Sea to the North and North-East. March 1989
