The Copper Butte trail...

The Copper Butte trail intersects with this, the Stage Coach trail about 200 feet further on up. The flowers that grow in the aftermath of a forest fire provide a tremendous contrast 7-25-03

The flowers...

Are called "Fireweed". They are often the first new growth in a recently burned area. Common in Colorado too.

Re: The flowers...

Unfortunately I didn't get some of the pictures I should have that had not only fireweed but lupine and some blue (belladonna like) flowers as well as monkey flowers. This pic indeed shows just the fireweed and fireweed is very common to northwest forests. On Abercrombie Mnt, there was a fantastic flower garden near the summit which, alas, i have no decent pics of. This forest burned in 1994 and still looks pretty grim. Here is a pic where the trail heads up towards Copper Butte's summit (a mile away) showing more of the aftermath from the fire but it is starting to get alot of green growth developing in the new young trees and shrubs.
