The Dalles Milkvetch (Astragalus sclerocarpus)

Their are dozens, probably hundreds of Astragalus species worldwide. This one has a relatively small range of central Washington State and adjacent Oregon and British Columbia. Some species are not poisenous, however others can be quite toxic, primarily to grazing animals. The seeds are pods are most toxic and can be addictive to horses. Affected animals may act strange, avoid other foods and eventually could die. Photo from the Sand Hills, Washington.
