The Devil's Kitchen, Snowdonia

The Devil's Kitchen, Snowdonia

Out on a mad day with just a Stubai Pick Hammer. A blizzard ensued and my trousers turned to snow slab. Up on the ridge, the buckles of my pack had frozen, with my overtrousers stuck inside. We had a tough time to locate a way down in the white-out, by which time I began to chill, though I didn't shiver. Back at the hostel a bout of hypothermia came on so rough that I shook 7 on the Richter scale for a full hour. (Incipient creeping cold where the core temp is okay but the cold bloodflow from the arms and legs swamps the system when you are back in the warm). Jacket: Everest Anorak, which I still have, in double-ply cotton duck. Totally windproof, but water, not.
