The farthest point is the summit of Goblin Mountain (5,606 ft). Goblin is 1.5 miles east of Kyes Peak. Kyes Peak was once known as Goblin Peak but was renamed in 1946 for Monte Cristo resident James Ellsworth Kyes (1906-1943). On December 24 nearly 60 years ago today, Kyes, a naval officer, drowned after he valiantly gave his life vest to a cabin boy when their destroyer Leary was sinking in the North Atlantic. The lake is Quartz Lake (4,790 ft), which drains into Quartz Creek. Photo taken September 22, 2001 from the north (from the Northeast Ridge of Kyes).
