The knife-edge on Atlantic's West Ridge route. There are conciderable drops to both north and south. In this instance, there was also a conciderable cross-wind which made life interesting. May 22, 2004

High Wind or...?

Breathing hard? The horizon is tilted! I get dizzy looking at this picture! Was the wind hammering you? I was on Sniktau this day, so I can relate. Probably cold, too.

We crossed this "knife edge" last year with even more snow on it and we weren't aware of how narrow it was, but had a sense that we shouldn't tarry long on this traverse. The west ridge of Atlantic is more challenging than it looks. Aspiring climbers that would do this route up or down should be aware that hidden challenges await them. Do not underestimate this route's potential for surprises.

Re: High Wind or...?

Yeah, I didn't notice the tilt until I looked at the photos later. What can i say, I was pretty tired! There was a lot of wind from my port quarter which must mean I was leaning into it to take this picture.

The ridge is definitely harder than it looks. Nothing particularly challenging, but a constant moderate level of exposure with nasty consequences in the event of a fall. And the damn thing goes on and on...
