Tooltip for IE: The Owl

You drive north 8 miles from Millinocket to Ambajejus Lake and wind through aspens and birch forest toward the Katahdin view boulder. Travel another 6 to 8 miles to the Togue Pond gatehouse. Give the gatekeeper $8.00 per out of state car (Instate does not pay). Drive past Abol to Katahdin Stream campgrounds. Park at Katahdin Stream and get water, leave word as to your destination on the ranger's clipboard in case of mishap. Take the white blazed Hunt trail.

Route Description

The trail gains 2600 feet in 3.3 miles. Follow the Hunt trail(white blazes for Appalachian trail) to Katahdin Falls on Katahdin Steam going gently uphill with the stream on the right (path is on west side of Katahdin Stream). At 1.1 miles observe the blue blazed Owl trail coming in on your left at Katahdin Falls. View the falls and continue up the Owl trail to the left which climbs steeply out of the ravine. Cross another stream and keep ascending through somewhat blasted timber (heavy winds here at times). A mile or so from the Katahdin Steam ascend steeply up the Owl over gravel outwash alongside the Owl cliffs. The cliffs are below and to your right. Curve clockwise up to the open summit. Good views of the west side of Katahdin are had here.

Essential Gear

I would expect snow in early may. Otherwise be prepared to deal with blackflies early in the season. Sturdy footwear, a headlight water and sandwich complete the picture.
