oh good lawdhey speaking of amateurs... have a question for you about this photo if you do not mind answering. i am having a hard time taking this type of photo, in the shadow of a mountain and blue sunny skies in the background.... i can not seem to get things set well enough to balance the shadows and the sky. i either capture the blue sky with dark silhouette mountains or detailed mountains with a washed out sky..... i just purchased a circular polarizer in hopes that this will help a bit, but any other advice you may have would be amazing and very much loved. thanks... i love your photos, they make me go ahhhhhh... cheers.

Re: oh good lawdHey Bobby, the key to balancing exposures like that is to use a graduated neutral density filter. Think of it like the strip of tinting on the top of a car windshield. The filter is dark on top, and changes to clear on the bottom half. You put the dark part of the filter over the sunlit portion of photo to more easily balance light and shadow areas of a photo. The best kind is one that slides in to a filter holder, like a Cokin holder, so you can slide the filter up and down to put it right where you need it. They make screw-in ones, but the line of demarkation is in the center, and that's not how we always compose photos.
Another method, if you're so inclined, would be to take two photos, one for the highlights and one for the shadows, and combine them in Photoshop. I haven't yet tried that technique, but I know plenty of photographers who have, to amazing effect!

With the new year comes a new calendar to replace the 2004 CMC calendar that contains several of your great shots. Thanks for beautifying my office wall for the past year, and for the continuing inspiration from your contributions here at SP. Would love to see more! Looking forward to my planned trip to the Sangres next September.

Re: New year, new calendarWe won't be able to leave for this trip until the 15th, which seems rather late. We'll try to get the 5 from South Colony Lakes, then the 5 in the Blanca group, targeting Little Bear on a weekday, although at that time of year this may not be all that important. I had intended to do this trip a couple of weeks earlier, but Duane can't get away until the 15th. We could conceivably move it forward into August, but that looks doubtful at this point. Would enjoy hooking up with you if possible!
