The summit of Whitetop...

The summit of Whitetop Mountain, taken from Buzzard Rock, considered a separate peak, and one of only five in Virginia above 5K feet.

Wonderful area.

The high country from Grayson Highlands down to Damascus is absolutely stunning. So many peaks, ridges, gorges, waterfalls, streams, forests that it would be impossible to see it all over the course of years. Even high elevation bogs. It's a very unique area. If you ever get the chance to visit, make sure you take State Road 603, both for the scenery and for trail access to Mount Rogers (you'll get to hike through the Lewis Fork Wilderness). And the National Forest Service Grindstone Campground is on that road--one of the most beautiful in the South, and one of the most comfortable (sits at 4,000 feet so it's rarely hot there).
