This is a picture of my climbing partner Scott walking on the AT back towards Carvers Gap from Grassy Ridge Bald. You can see Roan High Knob and Roan High Bluff in the background. January 25, 2006.

Re: beatiful "way motif"

Thanks. It was actually a hard picture to get. I had to wait for a long time for the clouds to part. It was a very cold day but well worth the hike.

nice shot

I didn't realize the southern peaks had views like this.

Re: nice shot

I was quite shocked too. Most southern peaks that I have been on have no view or a limited view. I am glad that I went.

My favorite backyard

My family has a house about a mile from this section of the trail, which is my favorite stretch. I believe the views from the Roan Highlands are some of the best on the AT.

Re: My favorite backyard

I would have to agree the views are great. It must be nice to have a home so close. Stay safe.

Just an awesome place to experience the southern 6000's

Walking from Carver's gap to the end of the tree line at Grassy Ridge Bald, and with the high winds and heavy fog, reminded me alot of what the Crawford Path was like in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Not near as rocky, but with plenty of grassy areas and 360' views when clouds finally started to lift off the mountains.

I don't know if there is a better hike in the southern sixers than the Roan Mountain areas.
