This is the first hairpin...

This is the first hairpin switchback encountered after exiting timberline although this photo does not do justice in showing the amount of elevation gained in this turn. And though this road pales in comparison on the "rough & ruggedness" scale with other 4WD mountain roads (see Blanca Peak for example), it should not be taken lightly. Above timberline, this road is loaded with sharp rocks which will eat highway grade tires like candy. I mention this only because I've seen people changing blown highway tires while on this road. Not fun. OK, OK, enough preaching. July 19, 1989.
