Thousand Lake Mountain  Sucess!

Kim and I camped at Elkhorn Campground the night before. It was suprisingly cold in the morning since a cold front had just gone through.

We parked near Deep Creek Lakes and hiked south to Snow Lake. We then located the trail up to the top of the summit plateau and headed cross country to the summit. The views were nice to the west, but the views to the east were very smoky due to the Pack Creek Fire in the La Sal Mountains. We only got a glimps of Capitol Reef.

After enjoying the summit, we headed cross country to the west and then followed the old trail to the north end of the summit plateau where we lost the trail. We eventually found it and walked down to the vehicle at Deep Creek Lakes. It was a nice loop hike and a good way to beat the summer heat.

Thousand lake mountain summit  Sucess!

Arrived at snow lake in the morning on Jun, 8 Left afternoon and summited the east side along cattle trail running south west, ounce you reach the top it's mostly meadows and groves of trees, easy to find cattle trails running north east lead me to flat top spring-- not running but some pooled water that seemed clean was there, with iodine I was all good. Camped by the spring for the night, lots of bugs. hiked down the south side to Neff's.

Loop Hike  Sucess!

I hit the Thousand Lake Mountain high point as part of a six-mile loop hike. Parked near Snow Lake and hiked south along the road until I picked up the trail near Wiff's Pasture, then followed that northwest to the high point. After summiting, I headed northeast back to the Jeep at Snow Lake. Took my two beautiful Brittany Spaniels and they loved it as much as I did! http://udink.org/2015/07/27/thousand-lake-mountain-flat-top/

Easy of the easiest  Sucess!

Camped the night before at Elkhorn CG. What a nice CG. The hike was extremely easy and it is amazing how wide open the plateau was. Would like to go back and climb Geyser and Hens Hole Peaks

Old story

I hiked up from Snow Lake and had the whole mountain to myself as far as I could tell. No vehicles beyond Elkhorn and saw nobody on top. There was some haze in all directions because of fires but this was one day before the Twitchell Canyon fire flared up. Here's the old story. When I first moved to Utah to stay back in 1980 my neighbor was George Eckersly who was then 95 years old. He was born in 1885 in Loa. His father was the President of the local LDS stake. In those days LDS apostles visited most of the Stake Conferences and when George was a teen(he didn't say exactly how old)the visitor was James E. Talmage who besides being an apostle was also a geologist.
James asked if they could go up to the top of Flat Top(Thousand Lake Mtn.), so they got horses and camp gear and headed up for a few days. One morning before breakfast George noticed that Talmage had walked out into the meadow and was kneeling down. George walked out to see if he was OK. When he approaced, Talmage turned and said to George "This is the original surface of the earth that Adam and Eve walked upon". Talmage didn't elaborate further and George didn't ask for more explanation. I don't know what it all means but I have been facinated with Thousand Lake Mtn. ever since and I finally made it to the top.

Beautiful!  Sucess!

Camped at Elkhorn CG, hiked up from Snow Lake, which is shorter than going up on the Deer Creek Lake trail. Park just off the main road, right at a fence line, rather than trying to take your vehicle around the north end of Snow Lake. The TH is around on the NW side of Snow Lake, marked with a wooden sign. The trail is little-used but fairly easy to follow all the way up to Flat Top. We then cut cross-country headed generally SW until we found the summit knoll. Thanks to Dean for leaving the trail register. Our afternoon was cloudless and stunning, with views all the way to the LaSals in the east. The hike far exceeded my expectations, and I will come back and hike this one again.

1000 Lakes Mtn Trail  Sucess!

This peak was very interesting. The song "Wide Open Spaces" comes to mind when I remember standing in the huge bare areas on the way to the summit. The summit was a nice suprise since I didn't know if it was going to be easy to find with all the flat area.
