Highest point in Amador County. Comparing to other known peaks in area, definitely less strenuous than Mt. Tallac. Maybe a good warm-up for it.
Hiked this peak with NorCal Women Adventurers. We had nice weather, breezy at the top and on the ridge.
day hike after Kirkwood closed for the season. combined with Martin Point.
Parked at the trailhead on Highway 88 (just a few yards off the highway on the right) it is just a couple miles before Kirkwood if heading east. My friend Fred and I did this because it is the highest point in Amador county. This is a fairly short hike with great views from the top...Kirkwood is just below on one side and Silver Lake on the other. Easy going most of the way and you pass Martins Point on the way. We made a wrong turn near the top and had to retrace back and around to gain access to the summit....just head to the left the near the top of the trail. The trail is not real well defined unless you know where to look. We spent some time on top and should have headed for Thimble Peak but we started late and wanted to get back down before dark. I believe it was about 2.5 hours of hiking total....7 miles roundtrip? This is good hike for your girlfriend or wife...not too difficult. And yes, some girls kick ass so no comments please.
Nice hike. From the Highpoint I also followed the trail about a half mile further to the west, to the 2 foot lower west summit.
Got started after lunch, hadn't done any research ahead of time and messed up twice - first I accidentally ascended the higher Thunder Mountain (thankful that happened as I didn't realize the named summit was lower), then on the return I went up to the top of the class 3 ridge near Martins Point, only to find out later that the named Martins Point was lower and an easy walk away. Why can't the high points be the named summits? Trip report is HERE.
With Mom and Sister. CA Co HP 28 or something like that.
Lots of wind and rain this day with only a few yards visibility - but had the whole trail to myself.
Hike Thunder Mtn along with Martin Point and Thimble Peak.
Nice twilight hike after picking up Calavares County earlier in the day.
After getting to the campground the night before we learned that shoes had been left at home, having chosen the campsite specifically so that we could do this hike though my not so outdoorsy girlfriend (now wife) agreed to do the hike in flipflops. Still managed to summit both the true highpoint and the namesake point. before heading home to Reno.
Easy morning outing from the namesake trailhead with a side trip to Martin Point.
Pics and commentary here.
With Matthew, we traversed from Kirkwood parking lot to Carson Pass, tagging all the summits along the way on a fine snowshoe outing. Trip Report.
Parked at Kirkwood and headed straight up the right side of the the bunny lifts towards Martin Point before they opened up. Great weather and views. Took ice ax and crampons but the grip on the snowshoes was just enough.
Dennis Poulin and I did this after camping in our vehicles at the trailhead. Still lots of snow when we were up there. Then we went on to pick off Granite Chief when it was considered the cohp of Placer county.
Enjoyable hike. Went to wrong summit first. Did the Calaveras COHP later in the day.
Led a group of 10 from Reno to the summit. Several snow crossings were required, but overall the mountain is losing snow fast and did not pose a serious challenge. Hiked Thimble Peak afterwards.
