Kirkwood Ridgeline Traverse (RIP Paul Ruff)  Sucess!

Tagged the summit sometime around 2006-ish as part of a Kirkwood ridgeline traverse. Pretty easy going. Stopped to pay respects at the memorial to Paul Ruff, who was a well-known ski mountaineer back in the early 1990s.

Up Thunder

Went up one of the summits with Dennis Goldsmith. One larger snowfield to avoid by going up the dirt on its left side. A scenic highlight of our recent Tahoe trip.

With my mom!  Sucess!

Highest point in Amador County. Comparing to other known peaks in area, definitely less strenuous than Mt. Tallac. Maybe a good warm-up for it.

Thunder Mountain  Sucess!

Parked at the trailhead on Highway 88 (just a few yards off the highway on the right) it is just a couple miles before Kirkwood if heading east. My friend Fred and I did this because it is the highest point in Amador county. This is a fairly short hike with great views from the top...Kirkwood is just below on one side and Silver Lake on the other. Easy going most of the way and you pass Martins Point on the way. We made a wrong turn near the top and had to retrace back and around to gain access to the summit....just head to the left the near the top of the trail. The trail is not real well defined unless you know where to look. We spent some time on top and should have headed for Thimble Peak but we started late and wanted to get back down before dark. I believe it was about 2.5 hours of hiking total....7 miles roundtrip? This is good hike for your girlfriend or wife...not too difficult. And yes, some girls kick ass so no comments please.

Thunder Mountain  Sucess!

Nice hike. From the Highpoint I also followed the trail about a half mile further to the west, to the 2 foot lower west summit.

Afternoon fun  Sucess!

Got started after lunch, hadn't done any research ahead of time and messed up twice - first I accidentally ascended the higher Thunder Mountain (thankful that happened as I didn't realize the named summit was lower), then on the return I went up to the top of the class 3 ridge near Martins Point, only to find out later that the named Martins Point was lower and an easy walk away. Why can't the high points be the named summits? Trip report is HERE.

Flipflops in the great outdoors  Sucess!

After getting to the campground the night before we learned that shoes had been left at home, having chosen the campsite specifically so that we could do this hike though my not so outdoorsy girlfriend (now wife) agreed to do the hike in flipflops. Still managed to summit both the true highpoint and the namesake point. before heading home to Reno.
